A HUGE difference (to say the least) between the "big and bold" roller curtains used on MSBA's GRUMMAN buses, and the electronic signs used on the "Em-Tee-Yay's" own "Borough Bombers".............

https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?156580 (note the "N35" sign is both upper and lower case; the bus on the right has an "all caps" curtain )

At least that update had more of a resemblance. Most, however, were totally ruined:

Actually, that second one dated to about 1980 or '81 when the R-40's ran on the CC - and definitely post-adding on all those safety features so people passing between cars, if they lost their balance, didn't fall off the train. Here's an actual post-rebuild:

W.B.:

Funny, I can only remember the "Artens" (aka "Thunderbirds") on the "CC"/"C", and, for a years years after the "Thunderbirds" were retired, the "R-27/30s"

I DO recall, after I graduated in 1975, riding "Anines" on the "CC" (then rush hours only); I knew that, when the noisy old "Arnines" were coming out to play, yet another rush hour was about to get underway.

Too, there was a brief "swap" in the early 80's, where the "Artens" were switched to the "E", and "R-44s/46s" on the "CC" (Your's Truly, of course, switched over to the "E" during this brief period!) Wink

I can also recall, several times, riding the "F to and from Coney Island, aboard a "Slant 40", back in the early 1980s (that large window on the storm door sure made for a great view!) Very Happy

Too, regarding new roller curtains with both upper and lower case letters, I wonder who was the whiz who came up with that idea?

I LOVED those HUGE rear exit door signs on the batwing buses; those signs practically SHOUTED out to all potential passengers, as to what line the bus was operating on! Wink

Ahhh, where have the years gone........

Speaking of "Thunderbird" paint jobs, these iconic cars wore a number of different schemes over the years, as seen here........... Wink

In this wintry scene from 1977, we see "Jetson" #2017 still carrying its classic, old-style roller curtain, while working the "Q44"............

Make that the Q44VP - Vleigh Place, later the Q74 until being eliminated in the June 2010 cutbacks. Both the 44VP and 44A terminated at Kew Gardens.

A-Astorian:

Thanks for sharing this additional info; being from New Jersey, I was not at all aware of this.

I always found Queens to be a quite interesting borough, not just because of the various subway routes (and the NYCTA/MTA bus routes), but also, for the several independent bus companies that once were based there, and, also, the LIRR and the Roosevelt Island Tram............
