Recalling Glasgow's "Clockwork Orange" Subway..........

This elongated circular system is, indeed, highly unusual by United States standards; in London, the "Circle Line" in London (not to be confused with our famed sightseeing yacht operation!) is another rapid transit line that "goes 'round".

Here in "Noo Yawk", the "GG"/"G" is also a highly unusual subway line in its own right, as it bypasses Manhattan entirely, serving only Brooklyn and Queens.

It could be set that the "G" is, for all practical purposes, a "glorified shuttle".

Nevertheless, it is a subway line on which thousands depend on each day, and at least deserves a brief mention here.....

Recall, too, that the "Arnines" were also equipped with "reverse screw" bulbs, to deter theft (and, today, incandescent bulbs, in general, are now well on their way to extinction)

The incandescent fixtures in the subways (and the "Tubes") that still intrigue me most to this day are what I refer to as "bulb clusters":"five-bulbers"/three-bulbers", etc.

I well recall these old, once-oh-so-commonplace fixtures (metal shades) on platforms, near token booths, and in some stairwells.

Then, too, how well I recall the incandescent fixtures in the tunnels (I can remember, if you were going past a switch/tower/etc, you often saw a fixture that had multiple bulbs mounted side by side (like the the time-honored subway work lights always so familiar)..............

Nary a florescent fixture in sight (not surprising, as the station would soon close)

Note, also, the bulbs under the platform edge; back in the 60's, I also well recall these type of fixtures at Journal Square and other "tube" stations..........

Queensboro Plaza, circa-1980..........

Note only incandescent lighting here; also, in the shadows at left, the bench/station sign with the hooded valance above; I well recall seeing these with (mostly) empty bulbs sockets, back in the day.

I also well recall the huge ceiling-mounted IRT signs at GRAND CENTRAL, TIMES SQUARE, and PENNSYLVANIA STATION; these, also, had hooded valances that shaded multiple bulbs (the last I can recall seeing lit, for a time, were the ones at Penn, 40 or more years back)

I believe this type of sign was also used at the IRT's PARK PLACE station.......

Note the huge "GRAND CENTRAL" sign suspended from the ceiling; rows of bulbs (under the hood) once illuminated the sign (at least one of these huge, impressive, and historic signs should be on exhibit at the NYCTM...........
