Roy:
In "OLD LOOK BUSES"(Luke/Metler) there is a photo showing the "TURBOCRUISER" (TDH-4512) after its conversion into an experimental bus.
The destination sign reads:
"GENERAL MOTORS RESEARCH"
You are correct; the "TURBOCRUISER" was later sold (as a conventional bus) to MARTIN LINES, where it operated for many years.
Interestingly, a decade later, GM research and development resulted in the "GT-309"; this was a New Look ("TURBO CRUISER II"), a TDH-5303/001, which was exhibited at the 1964/1965 World's fair at Flushing Meadows.
This bus was also unique in that it was the first New look to have sealed windows, made possible by year-round "temperature conditioning".
By the 70's, sealed-window New Looks were becoming commonplace; CTA once operated a number of these......

On a related note, recall the "California Steam Bus Program", beginning in 1969.
Four T8H-5305A's were purchased by LEAR MOTORS CORPORATION; one of these buses participated as MUNI's entry into the project.
In 1971, two New Looks participated in the Steam Bus Project, to test the feasibility of steam propulsion in transit buses; the project was initially set into motion by the California State Assembly.
AC TRANSIT of Oakland supplied one of their New Looks, #666, a 1969 TDH-5305; propulsion was provided by William Brobeck Engineers; the other bus was a T8H-5305A (provided by LEAR MOTORS, and operated by MUNI........

Getting back to rear windows.........
Unlike their Flxible counterparts, GM's New Looks retained large rear windows to the end of New Look production (1977 in the USA, and 1980 in Canada)
"First Generation" Flxible New Looks were equipped with large rear windows, but, by the 1970's, the rear windows were substantially narrowed; this might have had, as I had mentioned earlier, been required for additional structural stability, as a/c units were now mounted over the rear window......

There are also some very good photos and very detailed information on the "Turbo Cruiser" New Looks in "RAPID TRANSIT SERIES BUSES", by Evan T. McCausland, Chapter 2, "WINDS OF CHANGE".
The book is well worth the price (I purchased my copy off of eBay); the book is an outstanding and truly amazing in-depth work on the evolution and history of the RTS......
