Jules Verne himself would have been quite proud, had he conjured up this highly-unorthodox "seagoing trolley".....(!!)
This one is a HOOT!!

Here's another VERY interesting page* of the "Daddy Longlegs" seagoing "trolley" (note that UK law demanded that a trained sea captain be at the helm (or, at least on board!)

These old photos HAVE to be SEEN to be BELIEVED!!!!! |

Interesting to note that Volk's "Daddy Longlegs" was powered by GE electric motors; a number of London's trams (as well as early Tube trains) also used GE components.
Also, ACF built a number of early London tube stock; the cars were shipped to Great Britain (unassembled) and were re-constructed in England.
In fact, ACF later built a plant near London.
Regarding, again, the "Daddy LongLegs":
In the world of historical electric traction, this "unit", without a doubt, had to be the most unorthodox and most unusual piece of equipment ever built ('nuff said!)
This is not surprising in the least, especially when you have a sea captain at the helm of a "trolley" that carries a life boat and life belts!
And God bless all that sail in her.........

Further.........
Back in its heyday, the "Daddy Longlegs" seagoing "trolley" was indeed a popular subject for the penny picture postcards of the day; many were issued, and mailed to many who thought they were seeing things, when they got a glimpse of what was depicted on said postcards!
At least one highly-skilled early model craftsman built an operating miniature of this highly-unorthodox "trolley"!
To say that the "Daddy Longlegs" was indeed a highly-unorthodox means of transport (something right out of a Jules Verne novel!) is indeed an understatement!

Cyberider:
You are welcome!
You'd be surprised how many transit historians never even knew that the "Daddy Longlegs" even existed!
EASILY one of the STRANGEST "rail cars" ever to ride on rails!

Until 1935, one of the most scenic and most spectacular of all trolley lines was the "GREAT GORGE ROUTE", whose cars ran alongside the thundering waters of Niagara Gorge...................

Thanks NYO,
Very interesting and previously unknown to me. Too bad it didn't last longer. My mother and father went to Niagara Falls on their honeymoon. My Dad would have surely ridden the line if it were still there. |
