In the past week or two, the New Roadmaster or "Boris Bus" has come to my attention. A news article explained that the manufacturer, Wright Bus, of Ballymena, Co. Antrim, was in some financial difficulty and that the junior Ian Paisley was asking U.K. help.

With further reading I learned that fare-beating has become a problem on these three-door, two-stairway double-decks. When a conductor is aboard he merely observes whether riders tap on with their Oyster card. Apparently, he cannot challenge, that is the role of a rare inspector. Most of the time, there is only a driver, and boarders can enter and tap their card at any door.
---
Back to New York City and fare beating on local buses. On SBS, the Eagle Team can demand proof-of-purchase receipts, but much of the fare-beating seems to be on local buses, where riders are not given receipts. I have not yet learned whether Eagle Team personnel have Metrocard readers, and I also suspect that a rider could claim to have paid with paper transfer or cash fare, leaving the driver as a witness in a confrontation.

The topic could go on. One Brit commented that fare-beating was rare on single-door buses, as the rider had to pass the driver both boarding and exiting. NJ Transit used to give out receipts, but on arrival at PABT these were not inspected.

To enter administration in the UK apparently resembles filing for bankruptcy. Unfortunately, 1, 200 bus building jobs are at stake at Wrightbus in Ballymena, Co. Antrim.
