In accordance with a federal Office of Defense Transportation (ODT) directive issued May 27 mandating reduction of mileage for bus routes by 20% to conserve gas, Sunday service on 23 out of 30 bus routes throughout Manhattan is suspended totally, with Fifth Avenue Coach and New York City Omnibus the most affected; of the seven routes still on the roads include the M-1 Madison-Chambers and M-7 65th Street Crosstown lines of Comprehensive Omnibus Corporation; M-13 First Avenue and M-15 Second Avenue lines of East Side Omnibus Corporation; and M-8 Grand Street and M-9 Avenue B lines of Avenue B & East Broadway Transit Company, Inc. In the Bronx, the Bx-5 Eastern (later Bruckner) Boulevard and Bx-17 Allerton Avenue lines of Surface Transportation System are discontinued "for the duration," as is bus service to and from Orchard Beach; the Bx-5 will later be restored on Aug. 30, and Orchard Beach buses will resume on a limited basis two weeks from here. (Most Sunday service in Manhattan will be in place on June 6, but it will be the last time for the next two and a half months on the majority of routes.) |
