|

From 1987 to 2010, BC Transit in Broome County purchased buses only from Orion, eventually operating Orion I's, V's, VI's and VII's (not all four models at the same time, though). With Orion now out of business and money available to begin replacing the Orion VI's, the county will now turn to Gillig. Per the October 9, 2014 meeting of the county Board of Acquisition, BC Transit will purchase six to seven 40-foot clean-diesel buses from Gillig LLC using available options from Capital District Transportation Authority. Six of the buses are approved; the seventh bus is contingent on an amendment of capital funding from the county legislature in November.
Interestingly, Gilligs could have operated in Binghamton in the mid-2000's. BC Transit was an original participant in the Upstate NY hybrid bus consortium but dropped out when the contract was awarded to Gillig because of the presence of Orion's hybrid supplier BAE Systems in Johnson City. BC Transit eventually placed two orders for Orion hybrid buses.
