An ex-GREYHOUND (heavily customized!) PG-2505.

Though the rear end was heavily modified, you can still see that, as a bus, it had a rounded, windowless, CLIPPER-style rear......

An early streamlined YELLOW that also sported a Flex-inspired rear was the Model 1209, introduced in 1939.

YELLOW called these 25 seat-passenger buses "CRUISERETTES".

MISSOURI PACIFIC operated 19 of the type at one time.......

Three rare CLIPPER stills taken from a 1940 KANSAS CITY SOUTHERN publicity film.

What a BEAUTY! Very Happy

As long as we're on the subject of Flxible Clippers, I thought I'd set the record straight on Carey Transportation's (NY) fleet from its beginnings in 1949 until the arrival of the first group of GM PD 4104's in 1956.

All of the company's Clippers and Visicoaches were numbered from 300 up.

There were fifteen 23B246's, eight 23B247's and fourteen 23B248's totaling thirty seven standard Clippers.

Their last orders consisted of fifteen 23B249 'Visicoaches' bringing their grand total to fifty two which was probably among the largest Clipper fleets in the northeast.

In an interesting photographic study below we see a brand new Carey Visicoach posing at its slot in the East Side Airline Terminal Building in Manhattan in which the company was anchor.

It's notable that all Clippers came with Pantographic windshield wipers as standard equipment.

Mr. "L":

MOST impressive view....almost as though one were a mouse, and staring up in wonderment at this monstrous, hulking, noisy be tinyast! Shocked

As usual, GREAT input! Very Happy

As you have certainly seen, I've really been enjoying doing my "homework" for this most educational and enjoyable topic! Wink

"Interesting", is an understatement....that monster on the second from left, second from bottom row, defies description. It's three "riser's" outdoes even the MC-6 Supercruiser's two....

Years ago, everytime the "Grateful Dead" would perform at Madison Square Garden, parked across the street on 8th avenue in front of the post office would be a similar looking contraption built from school buses operated by "Deadhead" fans....

Mr. 'L',
Love that glimpse of the East Side Airline Terminal. Do you have any more photo's inside and outside of it? I very vaguely recall it had a sort of Art Deco decor, and had ticket counters of all the major airlines.
The low roof illustrated may be one reason that Carey discontinued service there when coaches grew too tall to use it....

traildriver:

I still recall enjoying making models of Flexies (roughly 1:48 scale) out of wood blocks and poster board....considering what I had to work with, they didn't come out all that bad!

I used to really get a kick out of "customizing" some of them with Old Look-style rooftop A/C units.......looked pretty dang cool!

As I mentioned earlier, the last "round rear" Flexies I can recall in service was during a family trip to Canada in 1973; most especially, I recall the coach used in airport service at Ottawa.

On another Canadian trip in 1966, I recall a number of old Flexies at Niagara Falls; here, one driver even talked to me, and showed me the engine!

Man, those were the days.....

In William A. Luke's "TRAILWAYS BUSES: 1936-2001 PHOTO ARCHIVE", there is a photo of another rare old streamliner, with what was obvious a windowless rear.

This was another BECK, the "STEELINER"; the one shown operated for FRISCO TRAILWAYS.

Though a "flat front" coach, it was equipped with a CHEVROLET engine up front........

"BECK-MANIA"! Shocked

"HOLD ONTO YER SEATS, FOLKS!" Shocked

Was VERY fortunate to come across this OUTSTANDING photo page on BECK coaches; an excellent collection of vintage BECK photos! (look for the MISSOURI PACIFIC "STEELINER")! Wink

A number of vintage BECK coaches are shown here, including the Scenicruiser-lookalikes! Very Happy

Enjoy....I sure am! Wink

*Also, make sure to spot the "Baby Yellow 743"......the front end clearly recalls those famed "Big Boys" on GREYHOUND! Shocked

Yep........."Imitation is INDEED the SINCEREST form of FLATTERY!" Wink

I have to tell you something - and I hope that no Beck fan that reads this will be offended by it;

I had a friend years ago that was in school buses and charter on the south shore of Long Island and he bought out a small charter operation in the City Line section of Queens (Ridgewood Coach Company to be exact) which consisted of about five GM Parlor Coaches and a like number of Becks.

The GM's were great but the Beck's were such junk that he threw them out only months later.

That's why whenever I see anything having to do with Beck I just ignore it!

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

Mr. "L":

Talk about "appearances ARE decieving!" Shocked

To look at a BECK, one would think "Man, this one TOUGH bus!" Shocked

Yet another "myth" shot to pieces! Sad

Perhaps this is one of the main reasons why preserved BECK coaches are scarcer then proverbial hen's teeth today!

Obviously, despite designing good-looking buses, BECK just wasn't in the same legendary league as GM........ Rolling Eyes

Fellows:

Earlier, our good friend traildriver expressed interest in the most unorthodox bus/truck combo (the "BRUCK"), once operated by the GREAT NORTHERN.

I had posted several links with photos; however, further research this AM netted another page, with several photos of a restored vehicle.

Interesting, detailed info on the vehicles as well.

Note that these unique passenger/cargo carriers were built by KENWORTH (Also note "PACIFIC" nameplate on the nose; this is also detailed in the text)
