Found this very interesting TDH 4509 in my travels through the Ethernet;
This former Key System Transit Lines (Oakland, Ca,) coach is seen retired from its second life with Monterey-Salinas Transit also of Central California's Bay Area.
It appears as though it had been converted to something like a motor home noting what might be a chimney on the roof and sliding windows that obviously replaced the original paired 'lift up' sashes.
What I've mentioned thus far doesn't really make this bus very interesting but what does is the fact that it's a very early version of a 4509 dating to February of 1949 and was built before a major modification was made in production to reduce stresses in the roof just forward of the rear and emergency doors - this is evidenced by the single sash forward of the rear door being the same width as the single sash aft of the rear door.
The problem was originally discovered as stress cracks in the roofs on a number of the 500 TDH 4510's built exclusively for New York City (with only one other going as a demonstrator to Los Angeles which is now the only preserved model in existence).
The fix, which did not involve the recall of all previously built 4509's, entailed installing a rigid steel plate in the superstructure extending up one side of the body, across the ceiling and then down the other side of the body just ahead of the rear and emergency doors.
This upgrade is easily identifiable by the smaller single passenger window forward of the rear and emergency doors which allowed space for the plate as can be seen on Green Bus Lines (NY) # 324 also below.
